Then join your schools community council! Community councils are traditionally elected in the fall at the beginning of the school year. Council members work with administrators and teachers at the school to decide how to distribute funds from the School LAND Trust program. The amount a school receives depends on how many students are enrolled, and funds can be used for a variety of purposes.
I have had the priviledge of serving on Diamond Valley Elementary School's community council this past year. In the fall, we were able to look at test scores to determine that students had "plateaued" in math while reading scores had been improving. We then came up with a couple of measures that would help the students improve in math, and the principal of the school took our ideas to the teachers. With the teachers input, we decided to use some of the money to get additional instructional aides to run small groups for math. We used the rest of the money on items the council felt were important to every child's overall growth - enhancing the music program and helping cover the cost of field trips.
Do you see a way to meet a need at your child's school, or have an idea on items/programs you would like to see the school support? Then volunteer to be a part of the community council! It is a great way to have a direct impact on the education your child is receiving..
